It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Thomas Kelly, a dedicated physician who devoted over 45 years to the care of others.

A proud graduate of Glasgow University, he earned his medical degree in 1970, beginning a lifelong journey in medicine and Obstetrics rooted in the values of his Scottish upbringing. He first served the community as a GP in Strathaven, where he was known for his steady hand and commitment to his patients.

In 1981, seeking a new chapter, he moved to New Zealand. It was there that he found his true calling in Accident and Healthcare. For 30 years, he worked on the frontlines of family medicine and urgent care, providing a calm presence and expert skill and knowledge. His colleagues remember him for his stories and witty anecdotes.

Beyond the hospital /clinic walls, he was a man of deep contemplation and quiet passions. A profound lover of nature, he was a keen observer of birds. His mind was equally active in the worlds of philosophy, politics. Whether reciting poetry or engaging in a spirited political debate, he possessed a rare wisdom that he shared generously with those around him.

After a long and distinguished career overseas, he returned to his roots in Scotland in 2016 to enjoy his retirement with his children in the country where his journey began.

He is survived by Christopher,  Alison and Joanne who remember him not only as a skilled doctor but as a man of great character, warmth, and resilience.
